During this strange time of isolation and a slower pace of living I get the impression that we are all becoming intimately aware of the three elements of our identity which Freud spoke of and waking up to how much control outside sources had on what we thought of as our personality. My current series of abstract paintings on wood panels reflect this introspective way of being. Layers of ego and self-proclaimed identity are instantaneously revealed and shattered; scrawled over and replaced with a new perspective. Gestural mark-making is paired with colour blocking and the layering of materials are reflective of this duality that we are all currently living. As with all my work, the materials dictate the process and this is why I'm currently working on panels rather than canvas; this surface lends itself so succinctly to the building of layers and the possibilities of a gestural narrative. Within these paintings, I express my desire to discover a new balance within our shared yet overtly separate space and the frenetic, anxious energy that comes from this forced way of being.
